The governors at Abel Smith School are fully committed to supporting the head teacher and leadership team to continue to provide the very best education and school experience for our children. The relationship between the governors and the leadership team is positive and based upon trust, openness and transparency. The governors provide a robust challenge to the head ensuring that targets are appropriate, that there is a drive for continuous improvement and that the budget is wisely allocated. Governors are well informed and know the school very well. Governors are often in school listening to children read and meeting with subject leaders and also take the opportunity to talk to parents at consultation evenings or forum sessions.
Governing bodies have three core functions as described by the Department of Education;
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
- Holding leaders to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff
- Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent
The Governing body at Abel Smith is made up of the head teacher and staff governor and a mixture of parent governors elected by parents and co-opted governors appointed by the governing body from the local community. The full governing body (FGB) meets termly as do the two sub-committees (School Improvement and Resources) who then report back to FGB. A full list of governors, their responsibilities and a description of the role of each committee is below.

School Improvement Committee
This committee is focused on the school experience, progress and attainment of every child at Abel Smith. We help the head teacher to identify priorities for the annual school improvement plan and thereafter monitor progress against it. We agree targets and review the performance data of every class throughout the school year. We have additional responsibilities to ensure that particular groups of children who may face challenges are progressing well. We make sure that pupil premium and sports premium funding are appropriately spent to best ensure successful outcomes. We take our safeguarding responsibilities very seriously and ensure that appropriate systems are in place to ensure well-being and set school policy in the areas delegated to us by the FGB.
This committee ensures that the school maintains sound systems, practices and procedures to provide effective internal financial control. We ensure formal budgets are submitted on time and that long-term financial planning is taking place. Each term we monitor spending against budget and ensure that expenditure remains within the prescribed limits. We provide support to the head teacher on all matters relating to the school premises and grounds, security, procurement and health and safety. In consultation with the Hertfordshire human resources advice team, we also review the staff performance management policy, staff structure and pay recommendations and set school policy in the areas delegated to us by the FGB.
In addition, each governor is assigned to a subject or area on which to focus as a link governor. Governors meet with subject leaders in the autumn term to discuss objectives and action plans, and then again in the summer term to share accomplishments at the end of the year.
