Today in school, Year 5 took part in the 2018 K’nex Challenge. We worked in pairs, to design and make a crane that could lift a weighted plastic container up onto a box. It had to have stable structure, a strong lever and a successful pulley system to be effective. Initially, we were given time to design our crane, then we had 60 minutes to construct an effective model. Our cranes were then tested and our SETPOINT instructor evaluated each model, advising us of improvements we could make.
Our class winners were Amelia and Sena – their crane had a strong structure and could successfully lift the weighted container, using a unique and clever ‘hook’ system . We learned how to work together, to share ideas , to use problem solving skills and to refine our designs to make our crane effective.
