Year 4 – Science

As part of our States of Matter topic we have been investigating gases this week. We started by learning about Joesph Priestly and how he discovered Carbon Dioxide and we then started to discuss this within the context of fizzy drinks! We looked at some fizzy drinks and identified the different states of matter within it (see pictures below), and then we started to investigate the weight of Carbon Dioxide. We were put into groups and given a selection of fizzy drinks in cups (the same cups to make it a fair test). We weighed them, shook them to remove the bubbles and then weighed them afterwards. Although there wasn’t a significant difference in the results, it’s still important to recognise that gas does have weight. Next week we will be looking at heating and cooling.
