Abel Smith Preschool
Abel Smith Preschool (Kindi) forms part of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) of Abel Smith School and we are located within the EYFS building, along with Nursery and Reception class.
We take children from 2 years 6 months old and until they join either a school Nursery or Reception class. Many of our children move on to Abel Smith's Nursery class.
Our sessions run from 12:45 until 3:30pm Monday to Friday, term time only. We expect that children will attend at least 2 of the 5 sessions per week.
We take children on a "rolling intake" - so whenever a space becomes available - but most places become available in January or September in line with school intake. We have a maximum of 18 children per session.
The fees are £15 per session, payable half termly in advance. In the term after the child's 3rd birthday 15 hours of government funding is available. The funding can also be claimed for eligible 2 year olds, in relation to certain benefits etc.
Our Ethos and Aims
The ethos of our Preschool is to provide an exciting environment for children to learn through play in partnership with their parents and to offer families an inclusive service that takes account of individual needs, promotes equality and values diversity.
We have an excellent staff team who are well qualified and highly committed to childcare and education.
The Preschool Leader has been practising since 1995, holds a BA (First Class Hon) in Education Studies and has also gained Early Years Professional Status. Our Deputy has been practising since 2000 and is trained to Level 3 in Early Years.
We aim to:
-provide high quality care and education for children below statutory school age;
-improve outcomes in educational achievement for all;
-work in partnership with parents to help children to learn and develop;
-add to the life and well-being of the local community;
-offer children and their parents a service that promotes equality and values diversity.
We believe that care and education are equally important in the experiences which we offer children. The routines and activities that make up the day in the setting are provided in ways that are inclusive, safe and social and provide opportunities to learn.
Opportunities are planned for children to:
-find out and explore; playing with what they know and being willing to 'have a go' (Playing and Exploring)
-be involved and concentrate, keep on trying and enjoy and achieve what they set out to do (Active Learning)
-have their own ideas, make links, choose ways to do thing (Creating and Crititcal thinking)
These are the characteristics of effective learning and are embedded within all aspects of our practice.
Each day the children will take part in small and large group activities, both inside and outdoors, and will be provided with a healthy drink and snack. We use the EYFS outside area as well as the school field.
